Call for human rights to inform the government’s response to Covid-19
It's become all too clear that the COVID-19 pandemic and the government response has hit some sectors of Irish society harder than others.
The government should collect and publish data on which communities are most affected by the disease, and feed it into its public health response. Those who need special protection must be prioritised. Government must also assess whether the significant rights restrictions and new garda powers are actually necessary.
This would be a human rights impact assessment. It is essential that one is carried out before 18 May, when the current restrictions are next due for extension.
Will you write to your TD now, asking them to make sure that the public health response is consistent with human rights?
