A letter to the Minister

Hate crimes are message crimes. They not only affect the person subjected to them - the hurt is felt by entire communities, in many cases hundreds of thousands of people who share the same identity and by society as a whole. One act can make an entire community feel excluded and unsafe. Hate crime legislation is essential to protect impacted communities, but there must be a multi-faceted approach to tackle the roots of hate. We must go beyond criminalisation if we truly want to transform society.

Will you add your voice to the call for a National Action Plan to tackle hate?

Dear Minister McEntee,

Ireland remains one of the only countries in Europe without hate crime legislation.

Your commitment to introducing hate crime legislation is an essential and welcome first step, and should remain a priority for Government.

However, if we are going to tackle the very roots of hate, we must go beyond criminal law. We are calling for a National Action Plan to tackle hate crime and hate speech and for a commitment to wider actions to ensure that the upcoming legislation is only one part of a multi- faceted and comprehensive response to tackle these issues.

We must ensure that everyone in Ireland feels safe to be who they are.
